Finding Joy in Typography with the Afterschool Font

I was staring at a brand board for a new local bakery, one centered on handmade pastries and a warm, community feel. The initial logo sketches felt flat, leaning on a safe, clean sans-serif. They lacked the personality the client wanted—that sense of joy, craft, and a little bit of whimsy. That’s when I decided to experiment with a different typeface: Afterschool.

A Crafty, Handwritten Personality

Afterschool is a font that immediately stands apart. Its description calls it blocky, silly, and very crafty, and that’s exactly what you get. It isn’t a fluid, elegant script; it’s a happy, handwritten scrawl that feels like it was drawn with a confident, thick marker. The letters have a charming irregularity—some lines are a bit thicker, the baseline wobbles playfully, and the overall shape is rounded and friendly. It’s a typeface built for positivity.

When I dropped Afterschool into the bakery’s logo mockup, replacing the tentative placeholder name, the entire mood shifted. The word “Hearth” (the bakery’s working title) suddenly looked like it was stamped with a custom cookie cutter or sketched onto a chalkboard menu. It communicated warmth and approachability before any iconography was added.

Building a Brand Identity from the Logo

That logo test became the starting point for a fuller identity. Afterschool’s strong, clear forms make it excellent for primary logo text, especially for businesses that want to feel handmade, personal, or playful. For this bakery, it became the main brand mark. From there, we extended it to secondary elements.

We used it for the headline on their packaging labels—things like “Sea Salt Caramel” and “Lemon Lavender” written across jar stickers for their signature spreads. The font’s joyful character made the product names feel special and crafted. On social media graphics announcing new weekly flavors, Afterschool as the headline font instantly created a consistent and recognizable voice.

Where It Works Best: Display & Accent

Afterschool is a display font. Its personality is so potent that it’s best used for headlines, logos, short phrases, and accent text. I wouldn’t recommend it for long body paragraphs on a website or dense menu copy; its irregular baseline and bold strokes can hinder readability at length. But for the moments that need to pop—hero sections on a website, poster titles, product name tags, signage—it’s perfect.

I mocked up a shop sign using the font, and the effect was brilliant. The blocky, silly letters held their weight and visibility from a distance, yet their handwritten style kept it from feeling corporate. On business cards, the bakery name in Afterschool paired beautifully with simpler, smaller sans-serif text for contact details.

Practical Testing and Pairing

Before committing any font to a full brand system, I test it in real-world contexts. For Afterschool, I placed it on:

This confirmed its versatility for both digital and print. The crafty aesthetic translated well everywhere, reinforcing the brand’s core message.

A key step was finding a supporting typeface. A playful handwritten font like Afterschool needs a calm partner for balance. We paired it with a simple, geometric sans-serif for all body text, instructions, and longer informational content. This pairing created a clear visual hierarchy: Afterschool shouted the joyful main messages, and the sans-serif quietly delivered the details. The contrast made the brand feel both professional and personable.

Technical Considerations for Real Projects

For client work, you need to look beyond style. When evaluating Afterschool, I checked its included features. A robust font file often includes alternates or ligatures, which can add even more customization to a logo. Its blocky nature likely means it has strong multilingual support, which is vital if the brand might expand. For commercial use, confirming the font licensing is essential—you need to ensure it covers the branding, packaging, and web use required for the client’s business.

File formats matter too. Having both OTF and TTF files ensures smooth work across different design software and eventual implementation on websites by developers.

The Impact on Brand Perception

Choosing a typeface like Afterschool isn’t just a stylistic decision; it’s a strategic one. This font directly shapes how an audience perceives a brand. For our bakery project, it fostered perceptions of:

This consistency across the logo, packaging, and marketing materials builds stronger brand recognition. Customers start to associate that specific, joyful handwriting style with the business’s values.

Beyond the Bakery: Other Creative Applications

While this story centers on a food brand, Afterschool’s utility is broad. I can easily imagine it bringing a similar touch of crafted joy to:

The key is identifying projects where the mood aligns—where blocky, silly, and crafty are brand assets, not distractions.

Working with Afterschool reminded me how much a single typeface can change a project’s trajectory. It moved a tentative brand concept into a confident, joyful identity. It’s a font that doesn’t just sit on the page; it adds a genuine, human touch. For designers looking to inject warmth and crafted personality into a brand, it’s a tool worth testing on your next mockup. Open a blank canvas, type a client’s name with it, and see where that joyful touch takes you.
